Backdoor

God opened the backdoor

I couldn't have passed through the front

Pious parishioners held the day

And every pew was taken

I never learned to apologize

For the things he gave me

The roses he hid

Along those secret pathways

I never accepted the ways of man

And God never said

They could be my teachers

But to the trees

I will listen

To the birds I will bow

And tonight I will

Say a prayer

Once again

For my friend

The cow

The animals know God

In heaven, God takes many forms

To stay nearby all the while.

A thousand deaths,

Share their wings

With every newborn seal

In heaven, the whale dives

And takes each curious soul

Along for the ride

In heaven, it's as easy

To blush with the rose

As to tumble with a stone

In heaven, the family tree

Is as big as life,

As big as you, eternally

And this heaven,

Was meant for you.
